Ten countries, 42,000 employees and almost five million tonnes of sugar per year: British Sugar Group is a big business. In fact, we’re one of the largest sugar producers in the world and a wholly owned subsidiary of Associated British Foods Plc: a FTSE 100 international food ingredients group that operates in 44 countries.
In China, production has risen to 700,000 tonnes of sugar. A new ‘green field’ cane factory is set to add to this. In Spain the company operates four sugar beet factories and a new sugar refinery. In addition, the UK business processes the entire country’s crop to produce a million tonnes annually. But perhaps most excitingly, we’ve acquired 51% of Illovo Sugar Ltd – the largest sugar cane producer in Africa – and have identified development programmes that will expand capacity of production substantially.
Despite all this, sugar is only part of our operation. The production process creates by-products which are separate businesses in their own right: everything from bioethanol fuel, to round salad tomatoes (which are grown in greenhouses using the heat and carbon dioxide that are generated in sugar production).
